MARCH 31, 2021
2020 was supposed to be an incredible year for a bunch of U12 girls.
Katie & Sophie Postlethwaite, Nisa & Muji Broome and Lily Edgell from Peninsula FC, along with players/teammates for Gorge and Bays United came together in 2019 with a plan to travel to Japan in the summer of 2020 for an experience of a lifetime: watch the Canada Women’s soccer team play in the Olympics and play some “friendlies” with other teams in Japan.
Everything was going smoothly…and then Covid hit.
The team started fundraising in January 2019 with players and families working hard to raise funds for their once-in-a lifetime trip. They did everything from chuck-a-pucks and 50/50 draws with the Victoria Royals to selling cheese and donuts. You may have also seen them helping out at Highlanders games, Pacific FC games, World Cup Youth Soccer Festival, Gorge tournaments/jamborees and Peninsula Soccer tournaments.
When it became apparent their trip could not go ahead due to Covid, the team decided to do something fantastic for the local sports community to enable more kids the chance to play sports in our local community. They donated all of the money they raised…almost $18,000 in total! ($13,000+ to KidSport Victoria and $2,000 to each of the Gorge and Peninsula FC hardship funds).
The team would like to thank all the families, businesses, players and clubs that donated either time or money to this effort and who’s funds will now go to help players and families during these hard times continue to play sports across Greater Victoria.
